Energize the Earth

The third annual Energize the Earth 5K, also our third year running it. I was also my PR 5K and I really wanted to beat it. The weather was cold and rainy, I was bundled up after being freezing at the race in Somerville a month earlier I didn't want to take my chances. Also, my Garmin Forerunner didn't feel like picking up the satellites that day. I had pockets in my jacket so I brought my new phone and tracked the race on my trusty Runkeeper app. Which I forgot about after crossing the finish line.

We had a lot more friends running with us this year, Gavin of course took off at the start.  I hung back and my friend became my carrot, until I caught up with her at about the first mile marker and we ran together for mile 2.  Mile third mile, I took off, hearing the voice cues from the runkeeper lady I had to step up my game or I was not going to beat my PR. I am not going to lie my training hadn't been as diligent as last year, I started about 2 months later. So I was pushing it to finish this one.  Oh and I hadn't mentioned it, I spent 11 hours shooting a wedding the Friday before, which means my body was beaten up

My official time... 33:22 (my PR is still 33:05)

My new Boston Strong Bic Band came in the mail just in time, so that made everything better!

The Running Bug has Biten

Gavin has the opportunity to run the "Mini Marathon" in San Jose along with my half. He is also currently waiting for his new job to start and feeling a bit antsy... maybe. He has been all about going out for runs with me, and for a guy that has taken about 3 months off from the gym, I am very impressed.

He was able to run almost 4 miles his first time out and then almost 6 the time after that. Too much too soon could have gotten the better of him, because the next 2 runs were not as long.  It has been a great motivational force for me in my "training" (I say in quotes because it is more about when I feel like running or guilt that I have a half to run and need to step up my game).  Running with someone really does make a huge difference, I even don't mind running without music.

After the Half... I will be working on speed.

Now that I have my Garmin I don't need to carry my phone with me on runs to track myself. This results in less pictures, which makes me sad.  I love pictures, even when they are a bit shaky from taking them while running.

Week 9

Last night I wanted to make sure to run at least what Hal had suggested. To my surprise, I felt pretty good the whole outing I felt really good. (I think I am going to stop saying "run" I think most people would consider my movement a slow jaunt) When I am outside I feel like my pace is faster than it really is.  If I am comfortable I guess it doesn't matter my pace, it just matters that I am going... right?

The Salem 10K really rejuvenated my positive mentality about the Half.  My "can do" attitude has been in full swing for a whole 3 days, I will keep you posted on how long that lasts.
Oh the finish line photos...I have had worse.

And for a tidbit of wisdom I feel the need to bestow: Don't go to Target hungry! You will only end up with a much more full cart.

Last Nights Workout: 3.69 m / 43 minutes (goal per Hal, 3.5 miles)

Salem's Bridge & Back 10K, Fantastic!

I learned a lesson, that when I dread a run, that usually means it will be a better run.  I just think back to all the runs that I could have had that I dreaded so much I talked myself out of going.

It was definitely a smaller race, but managed really well after a little confusion about where the start line was everything was smooth sailing from there. For only $25 and I received a tech T-shirt and 2 Sam Adams draft tickets.

The coarse was beautiful from Historic Salem across the Bridge to Beverly Waterfront and then back across the bridge to see move of Salem again.  So these are places that I spend a lot of my time. In fact I ran past a beach that I went back to lay out on later that day.  It is rare that I see these places at 8 in the morning. The weather was perfect, dry cool 70s. What a difference a few degrees makes!

Me hanging out in the back of the pack, where I stayed. 11th from the end!
These two ladies were nice enough to let me run with them for a while and I even learned a little bit about pacing and running form.  I felt like I owed her a trainer fee.  Once we hit the first incline of the bridge they were off.

The race was for the Boys and Girls Club of Salem, so the support along the course was actually really great. Plenty of people cheering and directing and three water stations.  Even though I was holding up the end of the pack I felt like people were still cheering me on. Not to mention running with this view and salty sea air was so invigorating.

Since I finished 11th to last out of 335 people I don't really have to tell you that my time wasn't stellar, but I ran the whole thing and I actually feel better about this one than the Gansett run.

Also, Yasso was there again!! If they are the new standard at the end of road races, I want to do more!

I definitely want to do the Bridge and Back again, and try for a spot in the last 25 people.

Final time: 1:13:50 (I trust this time a bit more since I crossed the timer on the start line and at the finish.)

Post race hydration?!?!?
2013 so far! With 4 more races on the docket.
Hit the beach post race!

Inappropriate Laugher… not the first time

We had reserved a camp site this weekend, but then found out that  monsoon was on its way, so we rescheduled the trip until August. Saturday turned into the usual of watching the HGTV and making our way over to the gym.

Workout: 50 minutes / Elliptical

Not gonna lie, didn’t put a 100% into it, but according to runkeeper I hit some new records.
Achieved new personal records for elliptical activities:
  • Distance in a week
  • Duration in a week
  • Calories burned in a week
I think it has more to do with me not spending as much time on the elliptical in the past. I have really been kicking it up a notch when it comes to the cross training while I am in wait for the gift card.

Who uses the mail anymore? Marathon Sports and my mom.

They also might be the last company that uses hand written gift cards. Holding back on the judgment in a very digital world.  Hell, I get impatient with the idea of ordering something online. Must have right now will pay for gas and higher prices to have things instantly.  I have thought of just biting the bullet and buying shoes, but I am cheap. In the mean time I just keep signing up for races.

I would like to give a shout out to the Nerdist Podcast with Timothy Olyphant it was very entertaining. (Previously noted that I am a nerd)  Turns out while I was oblivious to all things around me besides the podcast in my ears, I was laughing out loud (I don’t use the acronym) at very inappropriate times. Gavin was iPod-less and was fully aware of all the horrible things showing on the news and the other people in the gym doing embarrassing things, so my laughter was perfectly on queue for all of those things.

I laugh when I am nervous so it wouldn’t be the first time in laugh inappropriately.

Since we thought there would be a monsoon, we didn’t make plans to do anything Saturday, after the gym we decided to go for a walk.

Energize the Earth 5K 2013

On April 21, 2013 Gavin and I ran in the second annual Energize the Earth road race.  I am happy to say that it was our second time running it, so we have been there since the beginning.

The race starts in Lynch Park in Beverly, MA one of our favorite spots just to hang out and watch the sun set.  Although, this day we were there at 8:30 AM.

I have said it once and I will say it again... I am a slow runner, but in 2012 this race was my 5K PR (33:38.2)!  My plan was to beat my PR from last year.

Gavin and I decided to get Cliff Bars and Gatorade Prime Fuel drink.  Not going to lie, I think Gatorade is onto something.

The biggest thing that probably helped me pace myself was running with a friend of mine, Karen. She started me out at a really nice pace and I was able to keep that momentum going throughout the race.

I am not a big fan of stopping at hydration stations when I am doing less than 5 miles... I don't like stopping at all really, even for the 9K I did 2 years ago I just powered on through. Karen stopped at the first Gatorade station and I kept going... I know I am a terrible friend, but she was well aware I was on a mission for time.

I was able to find a few people that had a similar pace as much as they were not too keen on me tailing them (I don't really know that... but I just assumed that)
My pace splits per each half mile.

I had a bit of ipod trouble for the first part of the race... note to self, get that playing before they say go! Who knows if I had been able to get going at a faster pace then I might have been able to get a better PR. Or I would have not been able to finish as strong, as it was right after the 3rd mile marker I tried to give it more juice and wasn't able to keep it up.  That might have had something to do with the obstacle of running through sand at the end.

I beat my 2012 PR 33:05.9, alright so not by a lot. I beat it! Not sure if I was on a high from beating it or I just trained well enough, but I felt great afterwards. Not to mention, shaving 2 minutes off my time from a month earlier was a huge bonus.

Slightly embarrassing post race photo...

Karen, Gavin and I post race! (I made the shirts)

Then we went out for beers, I like to get my antioxidants so mine was blueberry! (hope the sarcasm is apparent)
